I paint in oil like I draw, and draw in charcoal like I paint … getting under the skin of the figure, pushing out layers of monochromatic tubes of color, or black dust and marks with charcoal, pastel and graphite, adding, retracting, brushing, and more layering till the unique essence stirs and the soul comes through and speaks. I paint to express soul… my soul, your soul, the animal’s soul.
I love the quote by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human (or animal!) experience”. There is something in that deep quiet place within me that knows his words are absolutely true, and realizes we are much greater than our thoughts, feelings, and day to day circumstances. This mystical French Philosopher-Priest was able to simply articulate the big questions like: “Who am I, and what am I here for”. My words are the materials of charcoal and paint. Mark making builds internal conversation. By isolating the figure with little to no background, making it sometimes bigger than life, allowing focus of one telling detail, contrasting light and dark to move the eye and sharpen internal awareness, all convey together to move my attention beyond the artwork and into a mysterious sensory experience of the individual. My desire for my work is that in some way it acts as a visual catalyst for the viewer’s personal experience of soulful communion and revelation.
